About us

Hello, we are Serena & Aaron! We recently made the move from the San Francisco Bay Area to Kota Kinabalu, Serena’s hometown! We’re foodies, nature lovers , cat parents (we brought our 3 cats with us, naturally! You’ll find a blog post about the ins and outs of moving internationally with cats on the main page if you’re interested!) and writers!

Serena was born in KK (the local abbreviation for Kota Kinabalu) She attended an international school until she was 16 and then chose to continue her education in California, where she studied Art History and met Aaron! She has a particular fondness for Sabah’s wildlife and cultural heritage, especially indigenous languages and crafts. She comes from a family with strong ties to Borneo and it’s natural history, her mother, Anthea Phillipps , is a botanist and author who also grew up in Sabah and used to work for Sabah Parks. Her father, Anthony Lamb, is an expert on the local flora and has authored and co-authored multiple books on the subject. Now retired, he used to work for the agricultural and forestry departments and has been in Sabah for over 50 years!

Aaron is a originally from Canada. He is a trained chemist, aspiring author, and big foodie who enjoys exploring the local markets and experimenting in the kitchen. He hopes to be able to compile a comprehensive KK “food map” while he is here.

Thanks for visiting our blog, we hope you enjoy following us along on our adventures (and misadventures!) Feel free to get in touch via the “contact us” page if you have questions or comments! We’d love to hear from you!
